Chicago River Turns Green For St. Patrick's Day

Hot Spots

Happy St Patricks Day! A great place to be on this “green” holiday is Chicago. The city began its festivities just before 11 a.m. on Saturday when the Chicago River was dyed a bright shade of green.

The 40-year-old Chicago ritual brought in large crowds as food coloring was used to turn the river greener than a dollar. Boats dumped the orange dye that turns green when it hits the water.

It doesn’t end with the river. There is a parade on Columbus Drive where authentic Irish bagpipes, a variety of marching bands, colorful dancers and even some familiar Chicago faces march.

Is it even toxic to fish? o.O Most food dye is non-toxic. Hence the fact that it's edible >.>
