If you're sick of the Hollywood scene, head to downtown LA and go to the Edison. It's located in the heart of downtown inside LA's original first private power plant building.
You travel down 2 enormous flights of stairs and enter a huge dark room featuring the main bar, and projector screens playing old black and white silent films. Make your way through the leather couches and private rooms of tables and pool tables, and you'll feel like you're in a haunted house. The generator lounge is great for huge groups. If you're on the DL, grab a seat in the Tesla Lounge. It looks like a room that's behind a trap door.
If you're looking for old school ambience, and a feeling of traveling back in time to the flapper era, you'll love this place.
